Use these tips to prepare for a high asset divorce

For Illinois couples with wealth or high net worth assets, the divorce process can be mind-scrambling. However, as the only alternative is to remain married, most couples suffer through the process anyway. While it is true that high asset divorces often feature complex property division elements, it is possible to use a little forethought and preparation to ease the divorce.

You might be thinking that preparation is impossible if you find it difficult to work with your spouse, but any preparation helps, even if it is one-sided. Here are some things you can do with or without the cooperation of your spouse to prepare yourself.

Gather as much financial documentation as possible: This includes accounting records, business records, bank statements, insurance documents and more. In other words, get your hands on as much as you can.

Think ahead to identify potential issues: These issues could be anything that may throw your divorce into chaos. For example if you suspect your spouse may be hiding assets, you should inform your attorney.

Be ready if things take a difficult turn: One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to hope for the best but be ready for the worst. Preparing yourself for the worst means you remain clear and level-headed if your spouse chooses to be combative.

Finally, do not succumb to emotion, which is often easier said than done. Acquire a divorce attorney as early as possible and do not be afraid to rely on your lawyer for guidance throughout the proceedings. In addition to the legal support an attorney provides, he or she will keep your very best interests at the forefront.
