Couples split up every day in the United States, including in Illinois. Typically, there is little public attention. However, when celebrity couples in other states file for divorce, they wind up being very much in the spotlight with every detail of their case being subjected to public scrutiny. This holds true with the recent split of a celebrity couple whose parting made entertainment news headlines.
The couple is Richard Marx, a singer best known for popular pop ballads, and Cynthia Rhodes, who is well-known as both a singer and an actress. Marx had his greatest success in the 80’s and 90’s, with songs like “Right Here Waiting” and “Hold On to the Nights”. Rhodes was in successful films like “Flashdance” and “Dirty Dancing.” She was also in “Staying Alive”, the “Saturday Night Fever” sequel with John Travolta where she and Marx first met.
After meeting in 1983, the couple married in 1989. They stayed married for a quarter of a century. Together, they have three sons, who are all in their 20s. The family has shared a home in Lake Bluff, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago.
Their divorce was announced on April 4 on the television show “Katie,” which is hosted by Katie Couric. Couric said that Marx was “back on the market” and offered to be a matchmaker. Marx tactfully responded by simply saying that the prospect of dating was new to him, as he had been married for 25 years.
Other Illinois couples are also divorcing this year. Most of their cases won’t get public attention. However, all of them may benefit from the counsel of an experienced attorney. With that counsel, soon-to-be ex-spouses can determine the best way to protect their interests as the case proceeds through the court.
