The divorce process is sure to bring a lot of pain, regardless of how bad things have become between you and your ex. Along the way, you are sure to deal with a number of challenges, even more so if a child is involved.
Any of our Illinois readers who have children and have gone through divorce in the past are aware of what this can bring. Kids need a lot of attention during the divorce process. If a child is swept to the side as both parents fight, the chance of long-term negative impacts is much greater.
Above all else, it is a must to give children a routine. There may be a lot of chaos surrounding your divorce, but it is important to keep some sort of structure for the well-being of your child.
Additionally, you should do your best to speak positively at all times. It is easy to bad mouth your ex to your child, but this is only going to make things worse. Remember, you would not want your ex-spouse speaking poorly about you, so you should not resort to this activity.
Finally, make extra time for your child during this difficult stretch. Make yourself available, both physically and emotionally, as this will allow your child to feel wanted.
Going through a divorce is hard enough, but when you add a child to the mix, the challenges are going to grow. It is important to remember that kids need a lot of attention during the divorce process, as this will make things easier on them.
