Understanding how divorce mediation works

On Behalf of | Jun 11, 2015 | Uncategorized

Many people are familiar with the benefits of divorce mediation. When compared to the court process, this can help both parties save time and money. It also allows both parties to be more involved, which increases the chance of a mutually acceptable agreement.

While the benefits of divorce mediation are well known, some people don’t fully understand the process and how it will unfold. Generally speaking, the couple, as well as a mediator, will get together for several meetings. Each one typically lasts one to two hours.

During the first meeting, all issues that need resolved are brought to the forefront. This ensures that both parties, as well as the mediator, are sure of the task at hand. During this meeting, the couple will also learn what information they need to gather before the next session.

With each subsequent meeting, the couple will work with the mediator to settle a variety of issues. The mediator does not make any final decisions, but instead, helps move things forward.

Once an agreement has been reached, the mediator can draft a document that is to be signed by both parties and their lawyers.

You don’t want to go into the divorce mediation process without knowing what to expect. It is better to be fully aware of what will and will not happen. This will ensure that you are not surprised by anything along the way.

Once you understand the benefits of divorce mediation, as well as the steps you will take, it becomes easier to decide if this is something you and your soon-to-be former partner should consider.
