The length of divorce mediation: What you need to know

On Behalf of | Sep 14, 2015 | Uncategorized

Have you come to the conclusion that divorce mediation is better than spending time in court? If so, and your former spouse agrees, it is time to get started. Before doing so, however, you will want to understand the finer details, such as how long the process will last and what you can do to push things forward in the right direction without any delay.

The length of the mediation is largely dependent on the complexity of the divorce, as well as the flexibility of both people. For example, if both parties are willing to cooperate and there are not many details to discuss, it is not uncommon for the process to come to an end after a few mediation sessions. Conversely, if one person puts up a fight, children are involved, and there are many assets to divide, it could drag on for many months.

You should go into divorce mediation expecting it to last a minimum of one to two months, but do not be surprised if it takes as many six months to complete.

If you want to speed up the divorce mediation process, only agree to it if you are willing to cooperate and ready to put this behind you. If you plan on fighting every step of the way, it may be better to opt for a more conventional divorce.

Divorce is never easy. If you are seeking a way to speed up the process and remove some of the stress, mediation may be the best option. This will save both parties time and money.
