There may come a time when you are unable to pay the child support required by the court. If this happens, you cannot delay in requesting a modification. If you do, you may soon find yourself slipping too far behind.

If you want to learn more about child support modification, the best thing you can do is become familiar with your situation as well as the laws in your state. This will lead you to answer this question: Does my position call for a modification?

Here are some additional child support modification tips to consider:

— Don’t delay. Once you realize your situation has changed, such as a job loss, you need to put the wheels in motion. You have to get in touch with the court and the other parent to discuss your situation.

— Consider mediation. Rather than go through the court process, see if the other parent is interested in child support modification mediation. This could save everybody time and money.

— Don’t stop making payments. Even though you may not be able to pay in full, you should at least pay some money every month. You don’t want to get too far behind. Furthermore, you don’t want to do something that will harm your child.

If your circumstances change, it is time to consider the ins and outs of child support modification. You never know if this is a possibility until you contact the court to learn more about your options. The knowledge you collect can help you determine what to do next and how much you will have to pay in the future.
