What should you do during divorce mediation?

On Behalf of | Oct 5, 2015 | Uncategorized

When it comes to divorce mediation, you are probably looking forward to the fact that you don’t have to meet with your former spouse in court. This gives you the chance to work out your differences without a long, expensive legal battle.

Even though there are benefits of divorce mediation, you need to know what you are up against. You also need to know what you are responsible for doing during the process.

Above all else, you should keep an open mind. This is what mediation is all about. Are you going to get everything you want? Probably not. However, if you are open to compromise everything will work out for the better.

Here is another thing to consider: Don’t rely on the divorce mediator to provide you with too much assistance. This person is available to push the process forward and work out some problems, but in the end it is you and your former spouse who make the final decisions. If you want somebody else telling you what to do, it is time to head for court.

Finally, you should never become combative during divorce mediation. It is easy to get upset. It is easy to take out your bad mood on your former partner. Even so, you need to keep things civil to ensure that the process comes to an end soon enough.

There are many benefits of divorce mediation, including the ability to save time and money. If you know what to do during this process, you will find yourself in better position to put your divorce in the past once and for all.
