It doesn’t matter if you call it alimony or spousal support, you need to know if you are entitled to this type of payment after divorce. After all, you don’t want to miss out on money that is due to you.
It is important to note that not every former spouse is entitled to alimony. This is only awarded when one partner is unable to meet his or her financial obligations without the assistance of the other spouse who can afford to pay the expenses.
There are times when alimony is temporary, such as when a former spouse needs enough time to complete a degree program or reenter the work force. There are other times, however, when one spouse pays the other on a more permanent basis. This depends on a variety of factors, including a spouse’s age, health and if he or she has a disability that could hold him or her back from earning money.
