Program aims to reduce conflict between divorced parents

One Illinois county has started a new program that is intended to make the exchange of a child between parents less stressful for everyone involved. DeKalb County has joined two other counties with similar programs. The county will offer the Neutral Exchange Program on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday evenings.

Illinois parents may be curious as to how a judge decides child custody when divorcing parents are unable to agree. Custody may be sole or joint. Despite the name, joint child custody does not necessitate that the parents share parenting time equally. It simply means that both parents participate in parenting. Legal custody also includes the right to make important decisions regarding the child, such as where the child will go to school or the child's religious upbringing.

Passport Applications Recognize Non-traditional Families

The U.S. Department of State recently announced a revision to passport applications that has elicited a wide range of responses from advocacy groups. The words "mother" and "father" have been replaced by gender-neutral "parent 1" and "parent 2" on the child's application. The change has sparked a lively exchange of views about the definition of family.
